Thailand Report

The recent Safety Options trip to Thailand this July was a great success.

Not only did I get to visit a beautiful country, but I also came to know some of the finest people you could ever meet.

The Arnoma Hotel in Bangkok was the scene of the first PPCT Defensive Tactics Instructor  and Spontaneous Knife Defense Instructor courses in Thailand. Hosted by Royal Security Services 1998 and The V2 Group the facilities were world-class and a great place for this first event of it's kind in Thailand.

The 14 students from five countries did an incredible job of learning the basics of teaching survival motor skills.

Everyone came to the class with a wide range of skills and experiences.  But they all put them aside to master the specifics of the PPCT Defensive Tactics and Spontaneous Knife Defense programs.

I'm very proud to have had the opportunity to work with them. I know they will be a great asset to their respective countries and organizations.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai is the traditional fighting art of Thailand. It is simply (not easy) and powerful.  It as developed for it's fighting effectiveness rather than it's flowery forms. Although Muay Thai does involve some basic throws, it is a standing fighting style known primarily for its strikes with the hands and elbows.  It also uses  devastatingly powerful roundhouse kicks to the legs, body and head.  This  kick is the basis for the PPCT Angle Kick.

I was lucky to be able to see Muay Thai up close during a visit to the famous Sityodtong Muay Thai camp outside of Pattaya.  This well known training camp is responsible for producing some of the the most famous Muay Thai fighters in Thailand. At the camp I got a lesson from Kru Tia one of the Muay Thai teachers who showed me how effectively they apply Fists, feet, and elbows!

It was wonderful to visit the the roots of an art that has so influenced PPCT techniques.  It was great to see how the Thais use the angle kick and brachial stuns in their fighting.

Aikido Clinic

During my stay in Pattaya, I was asked by Sensei Geordan Reynolds of the Aikido Yoshinkan Siam Shindokan Dojo on Beach Road, to do a knife defense clinic . This was great to see how smoothly the students integrated PPCT techniques with their traditional martial art of Aikido.

This just reinforces the fact that effective personal defense is not based on secret techniques or superior katas, but rather on universal physical principles, personal dedication to practice, and a survival attitude.

Thanks

I'd like to take a moment to thank some of the people that helped to make this training adventure possible:

  • Mom Luang Rajadarasri Jayankura, President of the Royal Security Service 1998

  • Sensei Geordan Reynolds, Director of the Aikido Yoshinkan Siam Shindokan Dojo

  • The V2 Group
